MBFWA Part 2: Toni Maticevski

Toni Maticevski’s show on Day 3 was probably the most highly-anticipated show of the week. And judging by the hype after the show, the anticipation was well-met.

Everyone in Fashion Land was buzzing about Mr. Maticevski’s architectural capabilities – taking a classic mid-century silhouette, folding it and wrapping and tucking it like origami until the garment became a 3-D masterpiece.

The models descended down a sterile white runway in pretty Dior-esque, floral, voluminous gowns. The ethereal collection was juxtaposed (my former English teacher would be so proud!) in the second half of the show by dramatic gun-metal and black pieces in heavy fabrications that equally drew gasps by the spellbound fashion set.

Toni Maticevski is currently one of the most integral members of Australia’s fashion society and perhaps the only Australian designer of his kind this week that hasn’t become overly influenced by street wear.

And that’s why he has such a cult following!
