I received am email from Ziera Shoes recently and the by-line was “we’re searching for women who empower others through their amazing spirit … Unstoppable Women”. It was one of those deflective “who me” moments.

Mother Theresa was unstoppable – she worked tirelessly for the needy through ill-health . Oprah is unstoppable – she has built a media empire from poor beginnings. Queen Elizabeth is unstoppable – she is 90 years old and has dedicated her life to ruling a Kingdom through the most turbulent of times, all while consistently looking immaculate.

Me? Well, my life is manic but exhilarating. On a daily basis, I am running between school runs, the office, fashion showings, the grocery store, photo shoots and family gatherings. I keep a clean house, manage a demanding legal practice and focus on raising my two beautiful children in an academia-strong environment.

But what most people don’t know is that I suffer from a debilitating mobility condition which renders me completely useless on some days. The disorder is dubbed “CMT” and it essentially means that I have weakening muscles in my feet which results in many, many physical challenges. Shoes are my kryptonite! Wearing comfortable shoes and avoiding debilitating pain in my feet by the days-end is something I scarcely believed possible.
