Cut the Crop

I feel like I was a little harsh on the midriff in my last post so my attempt at redemption is a whole post dedicated to the crop top.

Everyone seems to be embracing the trend that I’ve yet to foster so I am attempting to cast aside my prejudices (and insecurities) about the crop top and channel the trend that has entered this season – screaming.

Don’t get me wrong – it’s not for lack of trying. I’ve had two children and the physical changes my body went through while I was pregnant probably means that the shape of my tummy will never return to the previous version that it perhaps once was. I’m not one of those shrinking varieties like Adriana Lima (who walked for Victoria Secret two weeks after giving birth!) nor do I have an army of nannies and personal trainers. I’ve accepted this as a banal fact of life.

So, I’ve invested in a little insouciance and a lot of strategy to get my midsection on display and achieve a failsafe chic outfit.

So, if you’re reading this while cradling a child in your arms, still clad in your maternity jeans or feeling a little vunerable, know that you don’t have to surrender your style just because you’ve had a child or children. There are an array of options that satisfy two of summer’s biggest cravings – comfort and an unabashed flash of your middle:

… Drape a loose crop over high waisted jeans or midi skirt. There is no need to show your belly button.

… Layer the crop with a jacket or cardigan so that you’re not feeling overly exposed. Depending on the progress of your confidence levels, you can take it off or do it up.

… or channel an experimental spirit in a muted colour with a high-waisted skirt to give a little extra coverage while the top exposes only a simple slither of tummy.

I’m feeling quite self-assured with my combination of an a slightly audacious crop paired with a conservative mid-calf bottom.

Ultimately, the secret is confidence when approaching your wardrobe – so find a crop that suits you and exhibit the body you love.
