In case you missed the memo, there has been a shift away from expensive labels, six-inch stilettos, monograms and aggressive branding.
Alas – logo subversion!
Instead, we’re seeing rubber-sole chucks, sweatshirts, college t-shirts, Birkenstocks and (gulp) flannelette on runways and on the streets of fashion weeks around the world.
Even Chanel showed a casual A/W 2014 collection in sneakers. Yes, really!
Pedestrian clothing has become fashionable as the “Normcore” trend captivates the fashion industry this year. You might actually be an unsuspecting partaker, wearing your Nike sneakers, sweatpants and Kathmandu puffer vest over your football jersey.
So is Jerry Seinfeld our new style icon? Do we take style inspiration from the masses of tourists that flock our harbour each day? What about the ‘fashion people’ who spend exorbitant amounts of money and precious time piecing together an elaborate outfit – have they become passé?
However long this ‘trend’ lasts, the concept is great for us mere mortals who understand that minimalism is pragmatic because it’s oft difficult (and expensive) to favour fashion over comfort.
And, while on the subject of comfort, I’ve been in my varsity tee and Converse Leather Chucks all day: from the day-care-run to the grocery store and now while working from home – my outfit is as comfortable as it is nonchalant!
The leather skirt is for a touch of femininity (because I don’t do ‘tomboy’ well) and to offset the boxy shape of the tee.
My children can’t get enough of their rubber-soles either. If I get all my work done today, we might all take our chucks for a spin around the playground tomorrow and scuff them up a bit more.
