This post was going to focus on the revival of the midi-skirt. I was going to show you photos of this amazing richly-coloured skirt that takes a modern twist to a feminine silhouette. I was then going to explain that when I saw the print on this skirt, all I could think about was playing dress-ups with my little girl and taking her to High Tea (which, she loves by the way).
But … in the wake of New York Fashion Week, there’s been much talk about the demise of printed fabrics and the shift towards minimalism.
We’ve heard it been said previously that digital fabric printing is “probably the greatest innovation of 21st-century fashion” and you know it’s true because you’ve probably got a digitally-printed piece (such as this skirt) hanging in your wardrobe right now.
It has equally been said that digital prints have had their day! Over! Finito! So 2014! That can’t be right – rich, colourful prints have embedded themselves so deeply into our fashion conscious that the trend is not likely to ever disappear.
Besides, textiles just keep getting more interesting. We are no longer limited to original prints of polka-dots, leopard patterns and Aloha shirts! Designers can now saturate their own fabrics with beautiful art, be it abstract, surreal landscapes or … floral, as Keepsake does in this collection.
This skirt, that I was going to tell you about, embraces the digital age and injects interest into a somewhat basic silhouette.
So, continue to embrace the digital prints that swirled down the Spring runways.
Styling Tip: In order to subvert the trend’s apparent ephemerality, steer away from head-to-toe graphic print. Instead, select an elegant colour palette like this and pare down with a neutral top.
PS for those of you old enough to remember when Peter Morrissey launched his label “Morrissey” in 1997 – this top was a piece from that collection and I’ve had it ever since (now I’m showing my age)!
