MBFWA: Resort 17

Unless you were living under a social media rock last week, you may have noticed that something big was happening in Sydney. All your favourite bloggers, television personalities, media, Bella Hadid and Oscar de la Renta were all in one place. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia Resort. Yes, RESORT!

This is my first year covering MBFWA as an official Industry delegate and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the biggest change in Australian Fashion Week’s 20 year history.

Typically Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia is held in early April to showcase upcoming SPRING/SUMMER collections. This year, however, IMG pushed the event back to late May to showcase Resortwear! Why didn’t the industry think of this sooner? It makes perfect sense. River cruising has become increasingly popular, people are spending more of their disposable income on vacations and well, global warming!

And of course, Sydney gave it’s seal of approval and turned on it’s most glorious weather for the tran-seasonal event.

So, although you may not have a yacht-slot, here’s what you will be wearing on your next resort holiday (or layering through the tran-seasons):

1. Unsubtle Silhouettes – It would be remise of me not to start with the spectacle that was the opening show. Toni Maticevski, again, interplayed softness and structure and sent models down the runway with metal gags, shackles and sinister hardware, but stayed true to his occasion girl – bold, dark and perfectly couture.

2. Ruffle Up – Macgraw, By Johnny, and Ginger & Smart proved that although we oft get caught up in futuristic fashion conundrum, there is always room for playful, fanciful fashion with frills and flounces. Fun!

3. Good as Gold – The astute designers shamelessly buttered-up the A-list crowd with a pot of gold hues. This brilliant tinge has an uber-luxe kind of prestige that perfectly reflects the blur between summer and autumn.

4. Go with the Flow – Another overarching commonality was the relaxed silhouette (almost boudoir in some cases), designed to keep us cool. The industry’s finest designers gave us intriguing textures flowing down the runways with a nod to deconstructed and functional sophistication with holiday flair.

As it seems, these trends have relegated overt 70s silhouettes, denim, digital prints, botanical motifs and the tropical dress almost passé for Resort 17. Don’t shoot the messenger!
